HANIVILLE, PIETERMARITZBURG — A 38-year-old mother, Smangele Mkhize, was found dead inside her residence on Saturday morning in an incident authorities are treating as a suspected home invasion. Her one-year-old child was discovered unharmed nearby.
Mkhize sustained fatal stab wounds to the neck. According to accounts shared by relatives, her teenage son was the first to find his mother’s body and promptly notified his uncle—Mkhize’s brother-in-law—who then alerted the wider family.
The scene remains secured by investigators. A family spokesperson confirmed that relatives have formed suspicions regarding potential persons of interest, pointing to a jersey and gate reportedly linked to a known community member. However, the spokesperson emphasized these remain unconfirmed allegations pending official police communication.
“Police have not yet responded to our inquiries about the status of the investigation or whether any individual has been detained,” the family spokesperson stated.
Local residents expressed deep concern over persistent safety challenges in Haniville. A community activist, addressing neighbors and media at the scene, highlighted recurring calls for enhanced law enforcement support.
“This area has long struggled with high crime rates,” the activist said. “We have consistently raised concerns about the mobile satellite police station located nearby. Greater officer visibility—ideally around the clock—could make a significant difference in deterring violence here.”
The activist reiterated that while the satellite station represents a step toward improved policing, residents believe it requires additional staffing and 24-hour operational capacity to effectively serve the community.
Neighbors described Mkhize as a caring mother devoted to her children. The discovery of her infant son alive on a bed just meters from where she was found has brought both relief and anguish to those mourning her loss.
Detectives continue to process forensic evidence and follow investigative leads. Authorities have not released updates on suspect identification or arrest status.
As the community grapples with another violent loss, residents are renewing appeals for sustained police presence and proactive crime prevention measures in Haniville.
