Western Cape Bus Tragedy: 16 Dead After Overturned N1 Coach Near Touwsriver

Transport ministry mobilizes Road Accident Fund relief and mandates a 48-hour probe into the fatal Cape Town to Eastern Cape route disaster

WESTERN CAPE —A devastating Western Cape bus tragedy has left 16 people dead and dozens more hospitalized after a long-distance passenger coach overturned on the N1 highway near Touwsriver. The fatal incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, has triggered an immediate governmental response and a comprehensive probe into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The vehicle was navigating the route from Cape Town to Idutywa in the Eastern Cape when it went off the road near the Gulfstream Garage. According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the coach was carrying roughly 78 occupants at the time of the wreck, a passenger list that included several children.

The human toll of the disaster was confirmed by the RTMC, detailing that 16 individuals lost their lives in the wreckage. Emergency responders managed to extract and transport 20 injured survivors to Worcester Hospital for urgent medical attention. Meanwhile, 43 other occupants on board were assessed at the scene and subsequently declined medical treatment.

In the wake of the disaster, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa released a statement expressing their profound condolences to the grieving families. The ministers also extended their wishes for a swift recovery to the survivors currently receiving care at the hospital.

To ensure the victims and their families receive adequate assistance, Creecy and Hlengwa have officially directed the Road Accident Fund (RAF) to step in and provide the necessary support. Furthermore, the transport leadership has tasked the RTMC with conducting a thorough investigation alongside local law enforcement to determine the exact cause of the overturned coach.

Authorities have committed to a rapid investigative process, with a preliminary report on the crash’s cause expected to be finalized and submitted within 48 hours of the RTMC commencing their inquiry.
