MDANTSANE, Eastern Cape — Former two-time world boxing champion Zolani Tete was shot dead outside his residence in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, in a tragic incident that has devastated the local and global sports community. The 38-year-old former champion was fatally gunned down on Friday evening, abruptly ending his life just as he was preparing for a highly anticipated return to the professional ring.
According to initial reports from the scene, Tete was arriving at his homestead near KuGompo City alongside his girlfriend and their three children when the fatal shooting occurred. Law enforcement officials and forensic pathology teams have secured the area, launching an active investigation to determine the motives behind the attack and whether the killing was targeted.
The heartbreaking news was formally confirmed by Tete’s manager, Mlandeli Tengimfene. Throughout his illustrious career, Tete held both the Junior Bantamweight IBF title and the WBO Bantamweight Championship. He earned international acclaim for his explosive prowess, most notably capturing global attention with a legendary six-second knockout during a bout in the United Kingdom.
The violence cuts short a promising new chapter for the athlete. Tete had recently completed a four-year doping suspension that officially expired last month. Associates confirmed he was actively training and slated to make his official ring return this November, aiming to rebuild his legacy and continue providing for his family through the sport that allowed him to build his Mdantsane homestead from the ground up.
Unathi Binqose, a transport department spokesperson and former media colleague who grew up in the same community, expressed profound grief over the loss. Highlighting Tete’s remarkable discipline and the pride he brought to the region, Binqose noted the boxer’s journey from humble beginnings to international success.
“This is a massive loss for the Mdantsane community and the sport of boxing,” Binqose shared. “He built his life from nothing through his discipline and his famous left hook. We were all hoping to see him back in the ring. To see his life cut short this way is simply unbelievable.”
Regarded as a local hero and a standard-bearer for the Eastern Cape—a province that proudly bills itself as the “home of legends”—Tete was remembered by mourners at the scene as a warm, loving family man. He was deeply devoted to his community and to the memory of his late mother, whom he cared for devotedly before her passing.
As the police investigation intensifies, authorities face immense pressure to swiftly apprehend those responsible and provide answers to a grieving community. For the boxing fraternity and the residents of Mdantsane, the focus remains on mourning a true champion whose life and promising second act were tragically and violently cut short.
