Deputy Injured, Suspect Killed in Shootout During Response to Call in Fannin County

LEONARD, Texas — A Fannin County sheriff’s deputy was injured and a suspect was killed after gunfire erupted as the deputy arrived at a call in a rural area just outside the small town of Leonard.

According to the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy was responding to an incident in the 500 block of County Road 5012 when he was immediately met with gunfire upon arrival. Bullet holes were visible in the deputy’s vehicle, including multiple holes through the windshield and the back windshield completely shot out, as captured by aerial footage from the scene.

The deputy was transported for medical treatment and is being cared for at Baylor McKinney. Sources say he sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was killed at the scene. The Texas Rangers are now leading the investigation into the shooting.

The incident occurred in a rural part of Fannin County, appearing to have taken place just outside a residence, where investigators were seen working at the location.

Fannin County authorities have not yet released additional details about what led up to the confrontation. The Texas Rangers are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the exchange of gunfire.
