Gauteng Highway Patrol Arrests Suspect After Chase in Sandton; Two Firearms, Hijacked Vehicle Recovered

A suspect is in custody following a vehicle chase on Katherine Street on 9 April 2026, after police received a tip-off about a white Toyota Corolla linked to an attempted armed robbery of a guest near a hotel in Sandton at approximately 14:00.

According to authorities, Gauteng Highway Patrol officers acted on the information and mobilized the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and private security to track the suspects.

The joint team spotted the vehicle on Katherine Street with three occupants inside. When police attempted to stop the car, the driver sped off, triggering a pursuit. During the chase, two of the suspects jumped out of the moving vehicle and fled on foot. The remaining driver continued fleeing until the car collided with a truck and came to a halt.

The driver then exited the vehicle and attempted to run away but was apprehended by police a few meters from the crash scene.

A search of the vehicle revealed two unlicensed pistols, ammunition, and a pair of gloves. Investigators also determined that the white Toyota Corolla was a cloned vehicle and had been hijacked in Daveyton in February 2026.

The arrested suspect faces charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and reckless and negligent driving. A search for the two escaped suspects is ongoing.
