Joint SAPS-SANDF Operation Recovers Stolen R700,000 Toyota Prado After Cross-Border Shootout

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) recovered a stolen grey Toyota Prado valued at R700,000 on Friday morning, 17 April 2026, following a high-speed pursuit and exchange of gunfire near the Limpopo River border.

According to official reports, the incident began at approximately 09:00 when Musina Borderline SAPS members received an alert from a vehicle tracking company. The alert identified a vehicle reported stolen under the Krugersdorp policing area in March 2026. The vehicle was monitored traveling at high speed toward the river on the western side of the borderline policing area.

Police units responded and initiated a pursuit. The vehicle proceeded toward a position held by alerted SANDF members. When law enforcement officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the occupants opened fire on both SAPS and SANDF personnel.

A shootout ensued. The suspects subsequently abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot across the river into neighbouring Zimbabwe. The suspects continued firing shots at officers during their escape.

Authorities notified Zimbabwean officials, who conducted a search on their side of the border. The suspects were not located.

The stolen vehicle, a grey Toyota Prado with an estimated value of R700,000, was successfully recovered and seized at the scene.

Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
