Jan Afrika Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison for Murder of Stepson in Northern Cape

NORTHERN CAPE — A Colesberg Regional Court has sentenced 45-year-old Jan Afrika to 12 years of direct imprisonment for the murder of his 24-year-old stepson, Wiseman Henry Louw. The ruling marks the conclusion of a closely followed case in Kuyasa, Northern Cape, which was successfully prosecuted following an intensive investigation by local detectives.

The fatal incident occurred on Thursday, 17 July 2025, in the Operation Vula section of Kuyasa. According to police reports, the accused, the victim, and the victim’s mother were socializing at their home earlier in the day. The mother later left the residence to visit her daughter, while the 24-year-old went to a nearby tavern.

The situation escalated later that evening. Between 22:00 and 23:00, the mother returned home, but Afrika refused to let her inside the shack. She retrieved her son to help intervene and secure entry so she could retire for the night. Upon their return, the accused still refused to open the door, prompting the victim to force it open.

A verbal argument quickly broke out between the two men. During the confrontation, Afrika stabbed his stepson once in the chest with an Okapi knife. Emergency services rushed the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Following the stabbing, Afrika voluntarily handed himself over to authorities at the Kuyasa Police Station. He was arrested, formally charged with murder, and subsequently released on bail pending his court appearance.

The legal proceedings concluded on Monday, 08 June 2026, when Afrika appeared in the Colesberg Regional Court and entered a guilty plea to the murder charge. In addition to the 12-year direct imprisonment sentence, the court officially declared the 45-year-old unfit to possess a firearm.

The Pixley Ka Seme District Police Management released a statement welcoming the conviction and sentencing. Provincial leadership specifically commended the Kuyasa detectives for their excellent investigative work, which ensured a successful prosecution in this murder case.
