As the country prepares for the November local government elections, the targeted violence has put a harsh spotlight on the physical safety of candidates and community leaders.
Over the two-day registration period, law enforcement confirmed that a minimum of four individuals lost their lives in separate incidents across various provinces. The regional violence has been marked by two high-profile fatalities: a political candidate in Dunoon and a Community Policing Forum (CPF) member in Emfuleni. In the Western Cape, a 48-year-old Democratic Alliance (DA) ward candidate was fatally shot in Dunoon on Saturday evening, just as local voter registration activities were wrapping up.
According to the DA, the slain Dunoon candidate had formally reported receiving death threats earlier in the year. The party argues that this tragedy underscores the perilous environment for politicians serving in volatile areas. DA Western Cape Leader Tertius Simmers highlighted a grim historical precedent, pointing to the assassination of a DA member in Stellenbosch under nearly identical conditions last year. Simmers also drew attention to the notorious Crossroads ward, noting that not a single ANC ward councilor has ever successfully finished a full term there due to targeted assassinations. While acknowledging that this violence spans multiple political affiliations, Simmers identified extortion gangs as the primary driving force behind the current anomaly.
The localized bloodshed has prompted community safety advocates to probe deeper into the underlying motives. Abie Isaacs, representing the Mitchells Plain Safety and Development Forum, analyzed the surge in mass murders across the Cape region. Isaacs raised critical questions about whether a hidden, sinister agenda is at play, specifically designed to destabilize the democratic processes leading up to the elections.
Condemning the bloodshed, South African Communist Party (SACP) General Secretary Solly Mapaila expressed profound outrage. Mapaila stated in the strongest possible terms that the assassination of political figures and councilors—who champion tolerance and the peaceful acceptance of diverse political participation—is entirely unacceptable in a democratic society. He emphasized that ideological victories should be won through the strength of greater ideas, insisting that citizens must never be subjected to violence and death for their political involvement.
In light of the escalating violence, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed it is collaborating closely with law enforcement agencies to guarantee the safety and integrity of the entire electoral process. Concurrently, Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has issued a public appeal for political tolerance as the nation braces for the upcoming local government polls.
