Motalatale Modiba, the spokesperson for SALGA, addressed the growing security concerns by outlining the association’s proactive monitoring efforts. A key tool in this initiative is a specialized municipal violence incident reporting dashboard, which was developed jointly with the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC).
Modiba explained that the platform’s data uncovers a predictable, troubling cycle of intimidation, unrest, and political violence. These threats historically spike during specific electoral phases, namely candidate selection processes, active campaigning, and the post-election contestation of results. Although Modiba clarified that the past few weeks have not seen a sudden, massive surge in attacks, the anticipated seasonal patterns of election-related unrest are already beginning to surface.
A Decades-Long History of Violence
The dashboard provides a sobering historical perspective on the crisis. According to the data, there have been more than 400 verified incidents tied directly to political violence since the year 2000. A substantial portion of these historical events, particularly those recorded between 2000 and 2018, tragically resulted in the loss of life.
However, the SALGA spokesperson stressed that the crisis extends far beyond the highly publicized murders of municipal officials. The verified data encompasses a wide array of violent acts, including physical assaults, severe intimidation, property damage, and direct attacks on the vehicles and residences of councillors.
