PHILIPPI — The Western Cape National Intervention Unit (NIU) recovered three fully automatic assault rifles and arrested two male suspects following a vehicle search on Thursday, 25 June 2026.
The NIU members were deployed to the area in response to unrest at the Siqalo informal settlement. While patrolling Jakes Gerwel Drive at approximately 12:15, officers spotted a suspicious red Fiat Uno and monitored its movements. The vehicle subsequently stopped in front of a shopping complex, prompting officers to approach.
Upon inspection, police noted that the vehicle’s licence disc had expired in 2023. A search of the vehicle’s boot uncovered a large white bag containing the three fully automatic assault rifles.
The two male occupants, aged 32 and 45, were arrested on the spot on charges of possession of prohibited firearms.
The suspects are scheduled to make their first appearance at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 26 June 2026.
