Stepfather Handed Life Sentence by Tzaneen Regional Court for Rape of 15-Year-Old

TZANEEN — The Tzaneen Regional Court has handed a life sentence to a 39-year-old stepfather after he was convicted of raping his 15-year-old stepdaughter. The severe ruling, delivered on 23 June 2026, brings a close to a harrowing case that originated in the Ritavi policing area. To protect the identity of the minor victim, the name of the accused has been legally withheld from the public.

The conviction is rooted in a brutal assault that took place on 15 January 2024, within a village under the Ritavi policing jurisdiction. Court proceedings revealed that the man subjected the teenager to a violent rape, forcing her to lie on her back and forcefully opening her legs. In a bid to ensure her silence, the perpetrator issued chilling death threats, warning the young girl that he would murder both her and her mother if the abuse was ever exposed.

Despite the intimidation, the victim eventually found the courage to disclose the assault to her mother, who immediately escalated the matter to law enforcement. The case was assigned to the Tzaneen Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. Sergeant Phumudzo Mabongo spearheaded the probe, conducting a meticulous investigation that ultimately built a successful case for the prosecution.

The comprehensive evidence presented in court led to a guilty verdict and the maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe publicly welcomed the outcome, highlighting the critical role of the FCS unit in handling sensitive cases. She specifically commended Sergeant Mabongo for her unwavering dedication and thorough investigative work, which ensured that the perpetrator was removed from society and justice was fully realized.
