DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA — Tanzania is currently on high alert as a widespread crackdown on dissent unfolds ahead of planned anti-government protests. Authorities have arrested dozens of individuals in an effort to quell demonstrations organized by activists who are demanding democratic reforms across the East African nation.
The planned rallies, scheduled for Tuesday, center on demands for electoral changes and the immediate release of jailed opposition leader Tundu Lissu. Lissu is currently facing treason charges stemming from his previous demands for electoral reforms. Addressing the escalating tensions, Army spokesperson Sylvester Manguri issued a stern warning that security forces will take decisive action against anyone attempting to disrupt public order. Manguri also urged citizens to proactively report anyone found organizing the unauthorized demonstrations.
Law enforcement agencies have significantly intensified their operations, specifically targeting groups accused of mobilizing protesters through social media platforms. Police officials have officially described the planned rallies as illegal, a classification that has paved the way for the widening arrest of activists and the disruption of organizing networks.
The timing of the protests is highly significant, as they coincide with the 72nd anniversary of the ruling party. The political climate has been deeply tense for months following a disputed election victory by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who secured 97% of the vote. The election was heavily boycotted by opposition parties, and subsequent post-election unrest resulted in hundreds of deaths according to official government figures, though human rights organizations argue the actual death toll is significantly higher.
In addition to the political anniversaries, a massive security footprint has been deployed across the commercial capital as it prepares to host the annual Saba Saba International Trade Fair on Tuesday. The heightened security measures underscore the government’s determination to maintain strict control over public gatherings and ensure the trade event proceeds without disruption during this critical period.
