LIMPOPO — A high-speed chase in the Phaudi Policing area has resulted in the arrest of a 30-year-old male suspect and the recovery of illicit cigarettes with an estimated value of R180,000, according to law enforcement officials.
The incident unfolded on Saturday, 05 September 2026, at approximately 18:00. A police officer on routine patrol in Kanana Village observed a suspicious white Toyota bakkie traveling in the direction of Kolopo Village. When the officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver ignored the directive and fled the scene, prompting an immediate police pursuit.
The chase concluded between Rankhuwe and Madigoro Villages after the fleeing vehicle sustained a puncture, forcing it to stop. Law enforcement personnel apprehended a 30-year-old male suspect at the scene, while a second suspect managed to escape on foot.
A subsequent search of the immobilized vehicle uncovered multiple boxes and cartons containing Blue Remington Gold illicit cigarettes. The seized contraband carries an estimated value of R180,000. The white Toyota bakkie was also confiscated as part of the ongoing criminal investigation.
A spokesperson for the Phaudi Policing area confirmed that the arrested suspect is expected to appear in court soon to face formal charges related to the possession of illicit cigarettes. Authorities have indicated that investigations remain active as they work to identify and apprehend the second suspect who fled the scene.
