FREE STATE — A 34-year-old foreign national allegedly linked to multiple drug-related cases has been arrested by the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) in the Odendaalsrus Central Business District (CBD). The apprehension concludes a targeted law enforcement effort that began in June 2026 when the suspect initially evaded capture during a coordinated police operation.
On Saturday, 5 September 2026, the Welkom AGU received actionable intelligence regarding the whereabouts of the wanted individual. This information was immediately operationalized, directing officers to the Odendaalsrus CBD, where the suspect was successfully located.
Upon being spotted by authorities, the alleged suspect attempted to flee the scene. However, members of the Anti-Gang Unit swiftly intervened, apprehending the individual and taking him into custody for further processing.
A spokesperson for the Provincial Organised Crime Unit confirmed that the 34-year-old male was actively wanted in connection with three separate cases of drug dealing in Odendaalsrus. This development follows a prior Take Down operation conducted on 25 June 2026, during which three other suspects were arrested, and a vehicle along with other evidentiary exhibits were confiscated by police. The now-apprehended suspect had managed to evade arrest during that initial raid.
The arrested foreign national remains in custody and is expected to appear before the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court in the near future to face the outstanding charges.
