GAUTENG — A serving police sergeant is among four suspects arrested following a tense armed confrontation at a tavern in Nkandla Hostels, Extension 36. The incident, which unfolded on Saturday night, resulted in the recovery of an unlicensed firearm, suspected narcotics, and a slate of severe criminal charges.
The sequence of events began at approximately 22:30 on September 5, 2026, when a community member alerted law enforcement and local security personnel to a group of men reportedly in possession of unlicensed firearms at the establishment. Upon approaching the tavern, police and security members were met with active gunfire from the occupants.
Officers immediately took cover, surrounded the premises, and issued loud verbal commands demanding the suspects surrender. When the individuals refused to comply, law enforcement utilized the necessary minimum force to neutralize the threat and bring the situation under control, leading to the successful arrest of all four suspects.
A subsequent search of the premises yielded critical evidence. Investigators recovered four spent cartridges and a black zip-up bag containing suspected heroin. Additionally, a firearm with its serial numbers deliberately filed off was discovered concealed behind a deep freezer.
Authorities have identified one of the detained individuals as a serving police sergeant currently stationed at the South African Police Service (SAPS) Randburg. Preliminary investigations suggest the recovered weapon may be a police firearm stolen during a robbery in Olievenhoutbosch earlier this year, a claim that will undergo rigorous forensic verification as the investigation continues.
The four suspects are slated to appear in court shortly to face a comprehensive list of charges, including attempted murder, discharging a firearm, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and drug possession.
Gauteng Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major Fred Kekana, publicly commended the vigilant community member who provided the initial tip-off, as well as the police and security personnel who responded decisively to the imminent threat.
