CHATTY – Members of the Chatty South African Police Service (SAPS) have arrested a 38-year-old suspect and recovered two unlicensed firearms and ammunition during an intelligence-driven operation in Phola Park, Booysen Park. The arrest underscores ongoing collaborative efforts between local law enforcement and community members to combat illegal weapon possession.
According to a Chatty SAPS spokesperson, members of the Chatty Crime Prevention Unit were conducting routine patrols in the Phola Park area when they received a critical tip-off from a community member. The informant reported observing a suspicious man carrying a black bag toward the bushes near the vicinity of 7de Laan and Phola Park.
Acting swiftly on this information, law enforcement officers searched the identified area. The operation resulted in the successful recovery of a Baby Browning pistol, a shotgun, and two shotgun rounds. Shortly thereafter, a 38-year-old male resident of Phola Park was apprehended in connection with the incident.
The spokesperson confirmed that the suspect is now facing formal charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of unlicensed ammunition. All recovered weapons and ammunition have been seized by authorities and will undergo further investigation, including comprehensive ballistic testing.
The suspect is expected to make his first appearance in court later this week to face the charges.
