LIMPOPO — A major crackdown on infrastructure vandalism in the Sekhukhune District has resulted in a high-profile copper cable theft arrest, alongside the seizure of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The joint operation, conducted in Masakaneng village, highlights ongoing collaborative efforts to combat the illegal trade of stolen state and municipal assets.
According to Sekhukhune District police spokespersons, the arrest took place on Thursday, October 1, 2026. Members of the Sekhukhune District Tactical Response and Investigation Team, working in a partnership policing model alongside private security services, were acting on intelligence regarding a white Renault motor vehicle. The vehicle was reportedly being utilized to transport stolen copper cables across the district.
During the operation in Masakaneng village, which falls under the Groblersdal policing precinct, officers spotted the suspect vehicle and initiated a stop-and-search. Inside the boot of the car, police discovered the suspected stolen copper cables, alongside a firearm and ammunition.
The driver, identified as a 39-year-old Zimbabwean national, was unable to produce a valid firearm license, an ammunition license, or the necessary documentation to possess second-hand goods in terms of the Second-Hand Goods Act. Consequently, he was arrested at the scene.
The suspect now faces multiple charges, including possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of ammunition, and possession of suspected stolen copper cables.
Police spokespersons confirmed that the 39-year-old foreign national is scheduled to make his first appearance at the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Monday, October 5, 2026. Police investigations into the broader copper cable theft syndicate remain ongoing.
