NORTH WEST – Authorities have arrested an alleged ATM bombing suspect in Boitekong following the discovery of dye-stained banknotes at a local residence. The apprehension marks a major development in the ongoing probe into a string of ATM explosions across the Bojanala Platinum District.
The breakthrough originated on Thursday, 9 July 2026, when law enforcement received tips about individuals attempting to deposit dye-marked currency into local bank accounts within the district. By partnering with financial institution investigators, authorities successfully traced these suspicious transactions back to a specific account.
Leveraging this financial trail, the Bojanala Crime Intelligence Unit partnered with the Brits Trio Task Team (TRT) to execute a strategic raid on Friday, 17 July 2026. The operation targeted a home in Seraleng, near Boitekong, where officers uncovered a cache of dye-stained money that the occupant could not legitimately explain.
The individual taken into custody is a 52-year-old male migrant from Lesotho. He has been formally charged with possession of suspected dye-stained banknotes. Beyond the currency, detectives confiscated clothing from the property. These items are slated for forensic analysis to solidify the physical connection between the suspect and the broader ATM bombing campaign in the Bojanala area.
Law enforcement officials anticipate that this breakthrough will lead to the identification of additional accomplices tied to the criminal network. The 52-year-old is scheduled to make his first appearance at the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 20 July 2026.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, praised the operation as a prime example of effective, intelligence-led policing. He highlighted the crucial synergy between specialized police units and external stakeholders, commending the teams involved and reassuring the public that the investigation remains highly active to ensure every perpetrator faces judicial accountability.
