GAUTENG — A major crackdown targeting illegal blue light modifications has led to the arrest of two men in Centurion, with both suspects now facing criminal charges after unauthorized emergency signaling equipment was discovered on a private vehicle.
The duo is slated to make their first appearance at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 06 July 2026. They are jointly accused of violating Regulations 176 and 185 of the National Road Traffic Regulations, which explicitly ban the installation and operation of blue warning lights on non-official vehicles.
The legal proceedings stem from a routine traffic checkpoint in the Wierdabrug neighborhood during June. Officers manning the roadblock intercepted a car equipped with the prohibited lights. Upon being questioned, the female motorist behind the wheel disclosed that the car was actually registered to her spouse.
This disclosure triggered a deeper probe. By Friday, 03 July 2026, detectives had tracked down and detained the 40-year-old husband, who is the registered owner of the automobile. The very next day, on Saturday, 04 July 2026, authorities took a 49-year-old Mozambican citizen into custody. Investigators allege that this second suspect was the individual who physically installed the illicit lighting on the car.
Addressing the broader implications of the bust, a South African Police Service spokesperson highlighted the severe risks associated with these unauthorized modifications. The official noted that the illegal deployment of such lights has fueled the rise of notorious “blue light gangs.” These criminal syndicates exploit the emergency beacons to masquerade as law enforcement personnel, facilitating horrific acts of robbery, vehicle hijacking, and intimidation against innocent drivers.
To combat this threat and maintain the credibility of genuine emergency responders, the spokesperson reiterated that producing, vending, installing, or activating unapproved blue lights constitutes a severe criminal offense. Law enforcement agencies are ramping up their efforts to sweep the nation’s highways of these illegal devices and ensure offenders face the full weight of the justice system.
