LIMPOPO — A Northam Police Sergeant corruption arrest is set to unfold at the local magistrate’s court after a 44-year-old court orderly was charged with facilitating the escape of a female inmate. The police officer, stationed at the Northam South African Police Service (SAPS), faces multiple charges stemming from the 2023 disappearance of a foreign national who was scheduled for deportation.
The matter initially came to light on 30 October 2023, when prisoners were returning to the Northam police station from a court appearance. During a routine inspection, two relief commanders discovered that a female inmate had not been booked back into the cells.
When questioned about the missing inmate, the 44-year-old Sergeant, who was not within the station vicinity at the time, indicated that he was on his way to the police station. However, he failed to report for duty the following day.
The foreign national was later traced and re-arrested later in 2023. During the re-arrest process, information emerged alleging that a substantial amount of cash had been paid to the court orderly in exchange for her release.
Consequently, the matter was referred to the Limpopo Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for further investigation. Upon the conclusion of their probe, the case docket was submitted to the Senior Public Prosecutor for a decision on formal charges.
Following the prosecution’s directive, the 44-year-old Sergeant was officially served with a summons on Friday, 03 July 2026. He is now facing charges of corruption and aiding and abetting, and is scheduled to make his first court appearance at the Northam Magistrate’s Court on 31 July 2026.
Police investigations into the matter are continuing.
