FREE STATE — A targeted Free State illegal mining crackdown has resulted in the arrest of three men in Thabong, following a joint, intelligence-led raid on a residential property linked to illicit gold extraction operations.
The operation unfolded on Thursday, 23 July 2026, when the Bloemfontein Crime Intelligence unit, working in tandem with the Welkom Public Order Police (POP), acted on credible tips regarding unauthorized mining activities at a specific house. According to police spokespersons representing the involved units, the tactical team moved in to secure the location and apprehend those responsible.
Law enforcement representatives confirmed that the raid took a volatile turn when the occupants noticed the approaching officers. It is alleged that in a bid to resist arrest, one of the suspects deliberately released a dog, directing the animal toward the police and creating an imminent threat to their safety. Officers swiftly and safely subdued the dog, neutralizing the danger without sustaining any injuries.
Following the containment of the scene, the three male suspects, ranging in age from 27 to 40, were taken into custody. They now face formal charges related to the possession of Gold-Bearing Material (GBM). Authorities also confiscated a cache of illicit mining equipment and suspected gold-bearing substances, which have been secured for further forensic investigation.
