JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Democratic Alliance leader Geordin Hill-Lewis has issued a stern warning regarding the upcoming South Africa protests, urging citizens to channel their grievances through legal avenues rather than resorting to hostility against foreign nationals.
Addressing the public before the planned mass marches, the opposition head recognized the deep-seated frustrations gripping the country. He acknowledged that soaring joblessness, rampant criminal activity, and border management challenges are valid sources of public discontent, all exacerbated by a struggling national economy.
However, Hill-Lewis cautioned that these severe socio-economic issues must not be weaponized. He expressed concern that opportunistic politicians and vigilante groups might exploit the public’s hardship to scapegoat immigrants, using xenophobic rhetoric to incite unrest and advance hidden political motives.
Emphasizing the foundations of the country’s constitutional democracy, the DA leader declared that anarchy and intimidation have no place in the nation’s discourse. He argued that deploying mob justice or vigilante tactics under the banner of cracking down on illegal immigration severely damages social cohesion and disrespects the legal framework of the country.
A central pillar of his address was the assertion that immigration control is exclusively the mandate of the government. Hill-Lewis firmly stated that the law must be upheld by state authorities, never by politicians harvesting votes through hatred, and certainly not by street mobs. He drew a hard line against citizen-led enforcement, making it clear that no private individual or faction has the authority to issue ultimatums regarding who is allowed to reside in the country, nor should anyone be stopping individuals in public spaces to demand their identification documents.
Shifting the narrative away from targeting vulnerable communities, the political figure advocated for a constructive national agenda. He stressed that the country’s energy should be directed toward systemic solutions, specifically revitalizing collapsed state entities, fortifying border security, and stimulating economic expansion.
To guarantee the safety of the public during the forthcoming demonstrations, Hill-Lewis urged a coordinated and proactive response. He called upon law enforcement bodies, all tiers of government, and rival political organizations to unite in maintaining order and preempting any outbreaks of violence.
