EASTERN CAPE — A deadly Gqeberha police shootout has left three alleged criminals deceased following an intense armed confrontation with tactical law enforcement. The violent clash occurred within the Nyamazana Informal Settlement in Kwadwesi, bringing a fatal end to a targeted operation focused on a recent homicide.
The incident unfolded at approximately 06:00 on Wednesday, 22 July 2026. Members of the National Intervention Unit (NIU) were actively tracking a primary suspect connected to a murder that took place in the Kwadwesi area just a month prior, in June 2026.
According to a police spokesperson, the operation initially involved a raid on a specific residence linked to the target. However, upon entering the property, the tactical team found the house empty and subsequently departed the area. While the convoy was en route back to the Kwadwesi Police Station, fresh intelligence reached the officers indicating that the wanted individual had just returned to the home.
The NIU immediately redirected their vehicles back to the Nyamazana Informal Settlement. A spokesperson for the National Intervention Unit stated that as officers approached the residence for a second time, the suspects initiated the violence by opening fire on the incoming police units. The heavily armed officers were forced to retaliate in self-defense.
The ensuing crossfire proved lethal for the three men inside, all of whom were fatally wounded and pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that no police officers sustained injuries during the heavy exchange of gunfire.
Following the cessation of hostilities, crime scene technicians swept the area. A police spokesperson verified the recovery of two unlicensed pistols along with accompanying ammunition. These seized firearms have been logged into evidence and will undergo rigorous ballistic testing to determine if the weapons are tied to any other unsolved violent crimes in the region.
Because the incident resulted in fatalities involving law enforcement, standard legal protocols were immediately triggered. A spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed that the oversight body deployed investigators to the Kwadwesi scene. The IPID has secured the area and initiated a comprehensive, impartial inquiry into the exact circumstances that led to the fatal use of force.
