Kruger National Park Shooting: Private Tour Guide Arrested After Canadian Tourist Killed

PHABENI, MPUMALANGA — A private tour guide has been arrested following a fatal Kruger National Park shooting that claimed the life of a 69-year-old Canadian tourist. The deadly incident, which took place at a concession-operated braai facility near the Phabeni Gate, has led to serious criminal charges against the 38-year-old suspect.

Fatal Firearm Discharge at the Concession Area

The tragedy unfolded last night within the borders of the prominent South African wildlife reserve. According to authorities, the 38-year-old private tour guide was in the company of his clients at the braai area when the fatal mistake occurred.

The situation escalated rapidly when a firearm in the guide’s possession unexpectedly discharged, striking the 69-year-old Canadian visitor in the upper torso. Emergency efforts were unsuccessful, and the tourist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Detail the Sequence of Events

Providing clarity on how the accident transpired, police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo outlined the moments leading up to the Kruger National Park shooting. Colonel Masondo explained that the situation began with a simple question from one of the guests regarding the weapon.

“It is reported that one of the guests approached him and asked him if the firearm that he was having was it a real firearm,” Colonel Masondo stated.

The guide allegedly attempted to prove the weapon’s authenticity to the curious guest. “As he was trying to demonstrate to him that indeed it was a real firearm, it is reported that the firearm discharged,” the police spokesperson added.

Colonel Masondo confirmed that the resulting bullet struck the victim in the upper body, leading to his immediate certification of death on the scene.

Culpable Homicide Charges Filed

In the wake of the deadly accident, law enforcement officials moved swiftly to apprehend the 38-year-old private tour guide. He is currently in police custody facing a dual charge of culpable homicide and reckless handling of a firearm.

Colonel Masondo confirmed that a formal case docket has been opened to investigate the circumstances surrounding the negligent discharge. The police spokesperson noted that the investigation into the Kruger National Park shooting remains ongoing as authorities gather further evidence and process the scene.
