GAUTENG – A major OR Tambo International Airport cocaine seizure has resulted in the confiscation of 95 kilograms of narcotics, dealing a significant blow to suspected international trafficking networks. The illicit shipment, valued at approximately R28 million, was intercepted by South African law enforcement agencies during a highly coordinated operation at the airport’s cargo facility.
The bust took place on Friday, 31 July 2026, at approximately 13:00. The intervention was initiated after the SAPS Crime Intelligence’s Border Integrity Unit received actionable intelligence regarding a suspicious consignment. This critical information was swiftly operationalized by the SAPS Visible Policing Unit, who partnered directly with Customs officials and Menzies Aviation operational members to secure the area and inspect the freight.
According to official reports, the targeted cargo had just landed on a commercial flight originating from São Paulo, Brazil. Upon its arrival, the 95 kilograms of cocaine were immediately isolated and seized within the OR Tambo cargo section, successfully preventing the drugs from entering domestic distribution channels.
At present, no arrests have been made in connection with the bust. However, active and comprehensive investigations are underway as authorities work to trace, identify, and apprehend the individuals orchestrating the smuggling attempt.
The South African Police Service has reiterated its unwavering dedication to dismantling organized criminal networks that fuel the illegal drug trade. Officials emphasized that collaborative, multi-agency efforts will remain a top priority to rigorously safeguard South Africa’s borders and ports of entry from further criminal exploitation.
