FREE STATE — A significant Welkom drug bust unfolded in the Sandania suburb after authorities intercepted a suspected narcotics distribution hub, leading to the confiscation of multiple illicit substances and the detention of a 38-year-old foreign national.
The tactical operation was executed on Thursday, 2 July 2026, by personnel from the Welkom Public Order Police (POP). While engaged in routine crime-combating patrols, officers received actionable intelligence regarding an African male actively selling narcotics from a specific Sandania residence. Detectives rapidly mobilized this information and descended upon the targeted address.
Upon reaching the property, law enforcement encountered a man who perfectly matched the suspect description provided by their informants. Officers requested authorization to search the premises, which was willingly granted by the occupant. During the comprehensive sweep of the home, police uncovered a substantial cache of illegal narcotics alongside active trafficking equipment.
According to statements released by police spokespersons, the search team recovered 108 small ziplock bags filled with CAT, 10 sachets of crystal meth, and eight intact Mandrax tablets. In addition to the narcotics, authorities confiscated a small electronic weighing scale and an undisclosed sum of cash believed to be the financial proceeds of the illegal drug trade.
Following the seizure, the 38-year-old suspect was immediately taken into custody. He has been officially booked on dual charges of dealing in and possessing suspected drugs. Police representatives confirmed that the accused is slated to make his inaugural appearance before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court shortly to answer to the charges.
