FREE STATE – An on-duty police sergeant was killed in a fatal collision on the N8 National Road near Sannaspos while responding to a community complaint, prompting authorities to open a culpable homicide case. The tragic incident has underscored the severe risks law enforcement officers face daily in the execution of their duties.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 12 September 2026. Members at the Bloemspruit Community Service Centre initially received a complaint, prompting the dispatch of patrol vehicles. They were joined by backup units from the Kopanong and Heidedal Police Stations, forming a four-vehicle convoy traveling in an easterly direction.
At approximately 02:45, a white Toyota Quantum, allegedly driving recklessly in the westerly direction from Botshabelo toward Bloemfontein, deviated from its lane. The vehicle struck the right rear-view mirror of the lead police vehicle. In response, the driver of the second police vehicle took evasive action to avoid the oncoming threat. However, the Toyota Quantum subsequently collided head-on with the third police motor vehicle in the convoy.
Road Incident Management System (RIMS) roleplayers were immediately dispatched to the scene. Paramedics declared the 47-year-old police sergeant, who was driving the third vehicle, deceased at the scene. A second police sergeant traveling in the same vehicle was transported to a hospital for treatment of sustained injuries. The 34-year-old driver of the Toyota Quantum was also rushed to a local medical facility for injury treatment.
Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy. “It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of one of our members who lost his life while performing his duty and responding to a complaint,” Lieutenant General Lesia stated. He emphasized that the event serves as a painful reminder of the daily risks police officers endure to protect the communities they serve.
Lieutenant General Lesia extended thoughts and prayers to the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased sergeant during this difficult period. He also conveyed sincere wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured police member.
A case of culpable homicide has been officially registered and is currently under further investigation.
