LIMPOPO – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has arrested a 45-year-old male suspect and recovered an illegal firearm, ammunition, and a stolen vehicle in connection with a violent house robbery and kidnapping investigation in the Namakgale policing area. The coordinated operation by the Mopani Tracking Team, supported by Namakgale Detectives and the Tubatse Task Team, marks a significant breakthrough in the case originating in Makhushane Village.
The criminal incident unfolded in Makhushane Village, where a female victim was allegedly taken hostage by three armed suspects demanding money. Under duress, the victim was forced to lure a relative to the location under false pretenses. Upon the relative’s arrival, the suspects allegedly confronted them, robbed them of a licensed firearm and cash, and subsequently kidnapped the individual. The hostage was later transported to Phalaborwa, where the suspects allegedly forced an ATM withdrawal before releasing her.
Acting on actionable intelligence, law enforcement units executed a targeted operation on Thursday, 10 September 2026, at a residence in the Praktiseer area. During this raid, the 45-year-old suspect was taken into custody. Officers recovered an unlicensed 9mm pistol with four rounds of ammunition, various items suspected to be stolen, and a Volkswagen Polo—along with its keys—that had been previously reported stolen in Marble Hall.
Continued search operations conducted on Friday, 11 September 2026, yielded further critical evidence. Authorities recovered 28 R4 rifle rounds, 25 additional 9mm rounds, one R4 magazine, three 9mm magazines, and a jacket suspected to be directly linked to the robbery and kidnapping case.
The apprehended suspect is currently facing charges related to the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property, and other offenses tied to the ongoing investigation. He is scheduled to appear before the Namakgale Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 14 September 2026.
Police investigations remain active, with dedicated efforts underway to locate and apprehend the two remaining suspects believed to be involved in the incident. Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, commended the operational teams for their coordinated and decisive efforts in pursuing suspects linked to serious and violent crimes.
“Every illegal firearm recovered is a step towards safer communities,” Lieutenant General Scheepers stated.
