NORTHERN CAPE — A suspected drug dealer is facing multiple charges following a significant Komaggas drug bust executed by the South African Police Service (SAPS) under the ongoing intelligence-led crackdown known as Operation Shanela II.
The coordinated raid took place on Friday, July 3, 2026, targeting a residential property on Rugby Street. To ensure the operation’s success, a specialized unit comprising the Namakwa District Task Team, local district detectives, and the Springbok K9 Unit was deployed. Officers tactically secured the perimeter before entering and formally notifying the occupant of the search’s purpose.
Following a comprehensive sweep of the premises, authorities uncovered substantial caches of both mandrax tablets and tik. Law enforcement officials indicated that the volume of the seized narcotics strongly suggested they were staged for distribution rather than personal use. Alongside the illegal substances, officers also impounded a sum of cash suspected to be the direct financial proceeds of the drug trafficking operation.
A male suspect was taken into custody at the scene. He is slated to make his first appearance before the Springbok Magistrate’s Court, where he will answer to charges pertaining to both the possession of and dealing in prohibited substances.
Brigadier Schalk Andrews, the District Commissioner for Namakwa, praised the tactical teams for their relentless dedication to dismantling the local narcotics trade. Highlighting the broader impact of the bust, he issued a strong call to action for the public. Brigadier Andrews emphasized that community vigilance and active partnerships with law enforcement are critical to reporting criminal behavior and ultimately eliminating the devastating impact of drugs in the area.
