NORTHERN CAPE – The Philipstown South African Police Service (SAPS) has arrested an 18-year-old man for the possession of suspected stolen stock, following a community tip-off that led to the discovery of a sheep carcass in an open field near Riemvasmaak.
On Monday, 07 September 2026, at approximately 17:30, law enforcement officers received actionable intelligence regarding an individual allegedly in possession of stolen stock. Acting on this information, police units intercepted and searched the suspect in an open field near Riemvasmaak. During the search, officers discovered a sheep carcass concealed in the individual’s bag. According to a Philipstown SAPS spokesperson, the suspect was unable to provide a lawful explanation for his possession of the carcass.
The 18-year-old suspect is expected to appear in court soon to face formal charges. Meanwhile, investigative operations are actively ongoing to determine the exact origin of the carcass and to establish any potential links to broader stock theft networks in the region.
In a formal statement, a SAPS spokesperson commended the local community for their vital cooperation in providing the initial information that led to the arrest. To further mitigate agricultural crimes, SAPS officials strongly urge all livestock owners to permanently mark their animals and maintain regular, accurate accounts of their herds.
