Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal — A terrifying attempted hijacking in Phoenix left a mother and her children severely traumatized but physically unharmed after community members stepped in to rescue them from a group of armed suspects on Wednesday evening.
The harrowing ordeal unfolded at the intersection of Avalen Crescent and Northcroft. According to initial reports, a group of approximately four to five armed African male suspects targeted a blue Toyota Corolla. The assailants allegedly attempted to forcibly remove the mother and her children from the vehicle.
However, the suspects’ plan was disrupted when alert family and community members noticed the attack and rushed to intervene. As the bystanders closed in, the armed men allegedly fired multiple rounds of gunfire. The suspects then abandoned their attempt and fled the area in a silver-grey Hyundai i10.
KZN VIP Security and Emergency Medical Services were immediately dispatched to the scene following reports of the incident. Upon arrival, KZN VIP medics evaluated the female driver and her children. While miraculously no physical injuries were sustained, the victims were found to be severely traumatized by the event. Emergency personnel remained on the scene to provide crucial emotional support to the shaken family.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) joined KZN VIP and other emergency stakeholders at the location to secure the area and launch an investigation. The exact circumstances leading up to the targeted attack are still being established as enquiries continue.
