NORTH WEST — A targeted Taung police operation has resulted in the arrest of a 32-year-old suspect and the recovery of an unlicensed 9mm firearm, according to Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West police. This intelligence-driven intervention successfully disrupted a planned criminal act in the region.
The law enforcement action was prompted by specific intelligence detailing an alleged planned robbery of a delivery vehicle that supplies local tuck shops in the Magogong area. Acting on this information, police units intercepted the individuals at approximately 12:30 on Friday, 17 July 2026. While one individual was apprehended at the scene, a second suspect managed to evade capture and flee.
Authorities confiscated a 9mm pistol from the detained individual. Furthermore, a pellet gun, reportedly discarded by the fleeing suspect during the escape, was subsequently located and recovered within the village.
Initial investigative findings suggest the seized 9mm pistol is directly connected to a 2024 cash-in-transit robbery that occurred in the Taung vicinity. That prior incident resulted in the theft of a significant sum of money and the seizure of firearms belonging to security personnel. The Organised Crime Unit has assumed control of the case, and the recovered weapon is slated for comprehensive forensic analysis to solidify the link.
The detained 32-year-old is scheduled to face the Taung Magistrates’ Court on an initial charge of unlicensed firearm possession. Investigators note that further charges could be instituted as the probe advances.
