GAUTENG — A sweeping crackdown on local government procurement irregularities has led to the arrest of a former Emfuleni Local Municipality Fleet Manager in connection with a massive R16 million tender fraud. The 42-year-old official is now facing severe corruption and fraud charges after investigators uncovered a massive shortfall in a municipal vehicle contract.
According to a spokesperson for the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), the arrest stems from a deeply flawed fleet tender process. The municipality reportedly authorized and paid approximately R16 million to a service provider for the supply of 18 specific vehicles, which included a mix of bakkies and UD trucks. However, the PKTT spokesperson highlighted that a stark discrepancy was discovered during the audit: despite the full financial settlement, only seven of the contracted vehicles were actually delivered to the local authority.
Following the task team’s intervention, the suspect was taken into custody to face the law. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 20 July 2026, at 09:00. During this hearing, he will be formally charged with corruption and fraud relating to the irregular awarding of the contract and the failure to deliver the agreed-upon municipal assets.
Law enforcement agencies are maintaining a strict stance on the matter to ensure full accountability. The PKTT spokesperson confirmed that the probe into the R16 million discrepancy is still highly active. Detectives are currently following several investigative leads, and authorities have made it clear that further arrests are not ruled out as they work to expose all individuals involved in the alleged syndicate.
