R582,000 Dagga Haul Uncovered After Standerton Crash

A routine response to a motor vehicle collision led to the arrest of two men and the seizure of 97 kilograms of dagga on Wednesday, 03 June 2026.

The Standerton Visible Policing unit was dispatched to the crash scene at the Grootdraai Dam T-Junction along the R39 near Standerton.

Upon arrival, officers found a silver Toyota Yaris stranded on the roadway with severe damage to the driver’s side. The driver of the Yaris was unresponsive and was urgently transported to a local medical facility by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for treatment.

Police then investigated a white VW Polo, which had veered off the road and come to a halt in an adjacent field. The driver informed officers that he was traveling with a passenger. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, which was displaying Northern Cape registration plates, police uncovered multiple black plastic bags packed with dagga.

Authorities confiscated 97 kilograms of the illicit substance, estimating its street value at approximately R582,000. The VW Polo was also impounded as evidence in the ongoing investigation. Neither the driver nor the passenger in the Polo sustained any injuries during the collision.

The two occupants, aged 32 and 26, were arrested at the scene. Both men are facing charges of dealing in drugs, while the driver of the Polo faces an additional charge of reckless and negligent driving.

The suspects are scheduled to make their first appearance at the Standerton Magistrate’s Court shortly.
