JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — In a decisive move to maintain public order, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the private security sector are launching joint operations ahead of the highly anticipated 30 June protests. Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane confirmed that a unified strategy is already in motion to handle the upcoming anti-illegal immigration demonstrations, ensuring authorities are fully equipped to manage any potential unrest.
The intensified collaboration is heavily informed by the tragic events of July 2021, a period of widespread riots and looting that claimed over 300 lives and dealt a massive 50 billion rand blow to the national economy. The trauma of those events still lingers in the public consciousness, and the impending demonstrations have naturally heightened anxiety regarding safety and crowd control.
Despite the need for robust security, the integration of private firms into state-led crowd control has sparked debate. Critics point to the 2021 unrest, expressing concern that deploying private security alongside law enforcement could backfire. A primary fear is that some private agencies might employ foreign nationals who could potentially lack the necessary restraint during volatile confrontations.
Addressing these apprehensions directly, Wahl Bartmann, CEO of the Fidelity Services Group, dismissed the notion that his firm relies on foreign labor. Bartmann firmly stated that his company employs absolutely no foreign nationals. He added that the industry’s governing regulatory body is currently executing a rigorous cleanup process to root out bad actors, ensuring that only highly reputable companies are licensed to operate and assist local communities.
Reflecting on the hard-learned lessons from the 2021 crisis, Bartmann highlighted that proactive preparation is the key to avoiding past mistakes. He noted that private security leaders and SAPS commanders are now engaged in comprehensive joint planning. By anticipating various scenarios and coordinating their response strategies in advance, the unified task force aims to ensure a peaceful and successfully managed protest period.
