JOHANNESBURG – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has initiated a formal inquest following a fatal house fire in Yeoville that claimed the life of 35-year-old Romeo Katompa. The deadly residential blaze occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 16 July 2026, triggering a rapid multi-agency emergency response in the Johannesburg suburb.
At approximately 04:30, the Fire Brigade and Emergency Medical Services arrived at the property to combat the flames. Once the fire was successfully brought under control, responders discovered the body of Mr. Katompa trapped beneath the residence’s collapsed roof. Following the completion of standard forensic procedures at the scene, the deceased was transported to the Government Mortuary.
According to preliminary investigative findings and accounts from witnesses, Mr. Katompa was inside the structure when the fire ignited and was unable to escape. Authorities have stated that the exact origin and cause of the blaze remain undetermined and are currently the central focus of the active investigation.
A SAPS spokesperson issued a stern condemnation of viral social media rumors falsely connecting the deadly incident to anti-illegal immigration protests or associated violent acts. The spokesperson stressed that disseminating unverified claims is highly irresponsible and actively hinders the police’s ability to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation.
Law enforcement emphasized that the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation severely jeopardizes community stability, public trust, and social cohesion. Officials implored the public to pause and verify the accuracy of information by asking, “Is it true?” before sharing or reposting content online.
