Thembalethu Immigration Protest in George Demands Strict Law Enforcement

GEORGE, WESTERN CAPE — A peaceful Thembalethu immigration protest in George brought local residents to the steps of the Garden Route District Municipality headquarters on Friday, delivering a formal memorandum that calls for the rigorous enforcement of national immigration, business, and labor regulations.

During the demonstration, a community spokesperson representing the marchers highlighted that unchecked illegal immigration, unlicensed commercial operations, and widespread labor violations are severely straining local neighborhoods. The representative drew specific attention to the exploitation of undocumented Africans from the north, noting that these individuals are frequently victimized and utilized as cheap labor simply because they lack legal paperwork.

“We are saying that the law must take its course,” the community leader stated, emphasizing that employing an undocumented foreign national is a criminal offense that requires strict prosecution.

Addressing concerns from government departments about lacking the capacity to police these violations, the marchers proposed a practical solution. They urged authorities to employ local youth and collaborate with relevant sectors to train them for field operations, thereby creating jobs while simultaneously implementing the necessary law enforcement checks.

The submitted grievance document outlines several actionable demands for the government. These include comprehensive inspections of local business premises, rigorous verification of immigration statuses, and punitive measures directed at employers who knowingly hire undocumented workers.

In response, a municipal spokesperson confirmed that the community’s demands will be elevated to the appropriate authorities. The official explained that a district coordinating forum—which brings together municipal managers, mayors, and various government departments—will review the memorandum to ensure the grievances are properly addressed and find practical expression.

The municipal representative also commended the demonstrators for their conduct throughout the event.

“We are encouraged by the behavior of the marchers. We think it was a peaceful, successful march,” the spokesperson said. They expressed hope that the George demonstration would serve as a blueprint for the rest of the country, proving that immigration and labor concerns can be addressed legally and without resorting to violence.

This organized demonstration stands in stark contrast to recent events in the region. While immigration-related tensions have triggered unrest in several parts of the Garden Route in recent weeks, the organizers of this specific Thembalethu immigration protest emphasized their commitment to raising awareness and delivering their message strictly through lawful, peaceful channels.
