FREE STATE – Law enforcement authorities have successfully apprehended four suspected Rasta Gang members in connection with a violent attempted murder in Meloding. The Welkom Anti-Gang Unit (AGU), acting on critical intelligence, executed the arrests following a brutal, drug-related home invasion that left a local man with critical injuries.
The harrowing incident unfolded on Friday, 10 July 2026, at approximately 03:00. According to official police records, a group of six men forcibly breached the parental residence of an African male victim. During the home invasion, the assailants brutally attacked the man with dangerous weapons, aggressively accusing him of stealing their narcotics. The victim suffered severe trauma to his head and body, necessitating immediate hospitalization for urgent medical care.
In response to the vicious attack, investigators promptly opened a formal attempted murder docket to drive the criminal probe. The breakthrough arrived on Monday, 13 July 2026, when Thabong Crime Intelligence relayed actionable tips regarding the fugitives’ hideouts directly to the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit.
Deploying this intelligence, police teams moved swiftly across the area, tracking down and detaining four male suspects, ranging in age from 27 to 36, at multiple separate locations throughout Meloding. During the apprehension process, officers confiscated a cache of dangerous weapons allegedly utilized during the assault. The seized items, which have been officially logged by authorities as critical evidence, include pangas, knives, a tonfa, a spear, and a sjambok.
The detained individuals are formally alleged to be active operatives of the Rasta Gang. They remain in police custody and are scheduled to make their initial appearance at the Virginia Magistrate’s Court in the coming days to answer to the attempted murder charges.
Authorities have highlighted the success of this collaborative intelligence operation as a major step in dismantling local gang networks and restoring safety to the community.
