MPUMALANGA — A 36-year-old Zimbabwean national is in custody following an unlicensed firearm arrest in Witbank, stemming from a targeted multidisciplinary police operation on the R544 road. The coordinated effort, which unfolded on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, at approximately 16:40, highlights ongoing law enforcement initiatives to curb the circulation of illegal weapons in the Nkangala District.
According to a spokesperson for the participating law enforcement units, officers from the Middelburg Flying Squad, Nkangala District Highway Patrol, and the Nkangala District Anti-Hijacking Unit were conducting routine area patrols when they flagged down a suspicious Mitsubishi Colt. The vehicle was carrying eight occupants. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed that the driver possessed a firearm but could not provide a valid license or permit, resulting in his immediate detention for illegal possession.
While in custody, the detained driver provided investigators with actionable intelligence regarding a second individual allegedly harboring an unlicensed firearm in the nearby area of Klarinet. Acting swiftly on this lead, authorities proceeded to the specified residence. The spokesperson noted that the second suspect managed to flee the premises upon noticing the arrival of police officers.
Despite the suspect’s escape, a thorough search of the room yielded significant contraband. Law enforcement officials successfully seized two black bulletproof vests and two pellet guns from the location.
The spokesperson further confirmed that the initially confiscated firearm has been forwarded for comprehensive ballistic testing. This standard procedure aims to establish any potential links to previous criminal activities or ongoing investigations. The 36-year-old Zimbabwean national is scheduled to make his first appearance at the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court in due course to face formal charges.
