Mpumalanga Police Arrest Suspect in R1.9 Million Illicit Cigarette Bust

A 45-year-old man faces imminent court charges after a multidisciplinary law enforcement team intercepted a truck transporting contraband from Musina to White River.

MPUMALANGA – Mpumalanga police have arrested a 45-year-old suspect in connection with the possession of illicit cigarettes valued at an estimated R1.9 million, following a targeted interception in the Acornhoek area.

The arrest was the result of an intelligence-led operation initiated after law enforcement received credible information regarding a truck allegedly transporting illicit goods along the route from Musina to White River. Acting on this intelligence, a multidisciplinary police team successfully intercepted the vehicle and conducted a thorough search.

During the search, authorities discovered and seized a large quantity of suspected illicit cigarettes, culminating in the swift detention of the 45-year-old driver. The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to appear before a Magistrate’s Court in the near future to face formal charges related to the possession of illicit cigarettes.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, publicly commended the involved police units. He lauded the teams for their ongoing vigilance, coordinated effort, and the swift arrest of the suspect, reinforcing the province’s commitment to combating the illegal trade of tobacco products.

Authorities continue to urge the public to report any suspicious activities related to the transportation or sale of illicit goods to support ongoing law enforcement efforts.
