SAPS store room for Stock Theft Unit in Skukuza burgled, SANPARKS official arrested

The SAPS store room for Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit in Skukuza was reportedly burgled on 23 January 2025 whereby several state-owned items, such as crime scene bags and other equipment used during crime scenes, were stolen. After a case was opened, an investigation commenced which led to the arrest of a 52-year-old SANPARKS official yesterday, Tuesday 04 February 2025.

According to a report, it is alleged that on the day of the incident, the male suspect somehow forced opened and entered the store room container. It is further said that he allegedly helped himself with various state-owned items which members of the Police Unit use during investigations of poaching related incidents, as well as some cleaning materials, and sets of knives, to mention but few. According to the investigation, the store room seems to have been broken twice, allegedly by the same suspect. Members of the Stock Theft Unit became suspicious when they noticed that something was odd outside the store room and they began to investigate. It was during the course of the investigation when members discovered that the store room was indeed burgled and some items were stolen.

Subsequent to the case being opened, the investigation led to the arrest of the official, who was charged accordingly. It is also alleged that the suspect tried to cover his tracks by putting some items back to normality however all his attempts were fruitless as he was nabbed at the end. The intention and motive behind this burglary will form part of the investigation by the Police.

The male suspect is expected to appear at Masoyi District Court today, Wednesday 05 February 2025 facing a charge of burglary business. Police cannot rule out the possibility of more charges added against the suspect as the investigation continues.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, reiterated that acts of criminality cannot be tolerated and Police will act against anyone alleged to be somehow involved in criminal activities. “We do not want anything that may disturb our operations related to crime fighting in the park, including poaching. We are glad that an arrest was swiftly made after a break-in in one of our store room. People should take note that anyone who commits crime will be arrested, regardless of their status or positions. The matter is going to court, and we believe that the law will take its course without fear of favour, ” said the General.
