At a time when South Africa is grappling with complex social, political, and institutional challenges, the role of the legal profession has never been more vital or more deeply felt.
More than a professional gathering, the Legal Indaba Conference 2026 offers an important moment for the legal fraternity to reflect on both its responsibility and its impact. The conference aims to bring together leaders from members of the legal profession, thought leaders, the judiciary, academia, and emerging practitioners to engage with the evolving demands of the profession and the broader role of law in shaping lives, communities, and the nation’s future.
Taking place on 28 August 2026 at Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre, the Legal Indaba is expected to host more than 20 distinguished speakers and over 200 delegates, reinforcing its position as one of South Africa’s leading platforms for legal dialogue and thought leadership.
Held under the theme “Advancing Law. Inspiring Change.”, the conference will explore the evolving role of law in a rapidly transforming world, from the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital innovation to urgent conversations around ethics, governance, inclusion, and institutional accountability.
The 2026 programme features a distinguished line-up of confirmed speakers, including Phetheni Nkuna (COO, CDH), Sarah McKenzie (Partner, Webber Wentzel), Subashnee Moodley (Managing Director, Livingston Leandy Inc), Professor Charles Maimela (Executive Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Johannesburg), as well as representatives from the Public Protector’s Office, among others.
A central focus of the 2026 programme will be the advancement of women’s leadership in law, alongside a strong commitment to diversity, inclusion, and transformation.
These discussions reflect an ongoing effort to build a legal profession that not only upholds constitutional values but also better reflects and serves the society around it. The Indaba will also address some of the profession’s most pressing internal challenges, including mental health and wellness, talent retention, and the emergence of alternative legal careers in an increasingly dynamic professional landscape.
Key discussions will span law and technology, leadership through disruption, governance and accountability, and the role of legal systems in enabling economic growth and social progress, equipping legal professionals with the insight, resilience, and adaptability needed to lead in uncertain times.
“What sets the Legal Indaba apart is its balance of intellectual rigour and human connection,” said Thapelo Phukuje, Event Director of Legal Indaba.
“Beyond policy and legal theory, it creates space for mentorship, shared experience, and honest conversation about the realities of practising law in South Africa today, recognising the people behind the profession who carry the responsibility of interpreting, defending, and advancing justice. Ultimately, Legal Indaba 2026 seeks to reaffirm the legal fraternity’s role not only as custodians of justice, but as active contributors to South Africa’s democratic future.”
Attorney Paula Phukuje added: “The law touches every life, but it is the people within the profession who determine whether it truly serves. Legal Indaba creates a space for professionals to reflect, connect, and recommit to the profession with deeper consciousness and responsibility to society.”

Through dialogue, collaboration, and collective purpose, the Indaba aims to help shape a more ethical, inclusive, and forward-looking legal system, one that recognises that behind every law, every judgment, and every institution are people working to make justice meaningful.
Legal professionals, academics, policymakers, students, and industry stakeholders are invited to be part of this important national conversation.
