ODENDAALSRUS — A major crackdown on infrastructure sabotage has led to significant Operation Ukubuza copper cable arrests in Odendaalsrus, resulting in the recovery of stolen Transnet property and the detention of four suspects.
Spokespersons for the joint task force—representing the Operation Ukubuza team, the Dimension Infrastructure Crimes Team, Odendaalsrus police, Wolmaransstad police, and Transnet Senqobile Security—confirmed that the multi-agency operation was executed on Monday, 20 July 2026. The collaborative effort was launched after authorities operationalized actionable intelligence regarding Transnet copper cable that had been allegedly stolen from the Wolmaransstad area.
Following the intelligence leads, the joint teams tracked the stolen materials to a scrap metal dealer located in Kutlwanong. During the search and seizure operation at the premises, authorities positively identified and confiscated 766 kilograms of copper cable. The recovered infrastructure is estimated to have a value of R150,000.
In the wake of the seizure, four male suspects, ranging in age from 25 to 38, were taken into custody. According to the spokespersons, the men are facing severe charges related to the sabotage of public utilities. They have been officially charged with tampering with, damaging, and/or destroying essential infrastructure, alongside the possession of suspected stolen property.
Furthermore, the 38-year-old suspect among the group faces an additional charge for contravening the Immigration Act.
The spokespersons confirmed that all four accused individuals are expected to make their first appearance before the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 22 July 2026.
