FREE STATE – Authorities in the Free State have taken a 46-year-old man into custody in Dewetsdorp following allegations of sexual assault and a subsequent attack on a police officer. The arrest underscores a determined local response to gender-based violence, stemming from a late-night disturbance on Church Street that resulted in the suspect facing multiple serious charges.
A South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson detailed that the sequence of events began around 21:00 on Friday, 21 August 2026. An 18-year-old woman was performing her duties as a bartender at a local venue when the suspect entered the establishment with a friend. According to the official report, the man began harassing the young woman by repeatedly directing explicit and inappropriate comments toward her private body parts. She chose to ignore the remarks and maintain her professional focus.
The situation intensified near 23:00 as the venue prepared to close for the night. Although all other customers had departed, the 46-year-old man insisted on staying behind to finish his drink. Once he finished, he allegedly escalated his behavior by making explicit vulgar suggestions, followed by unwanted physical touching and inappropriate sexual acts against the victim.
Managing to push the man away, the victim successfully secured the premises. However, as she stepped outside, the suspect continued his hostile behavior, shouting verbal insults and making aggressive, inappropriate gestures. She immediately reached out to her parents, who rushed to the location and promptly summoned the South African Police Service.
When law enforcement personnel arrived on the scene, the suspect’s aggression escalated further, resulting in a physical assault against a SAPS Reservist Constable. Officers swiftly intervened, successfully subduing the individual and taking him into custody.
The SAPS spokesperson confirmed that the suspect is currently being held in police custody. He is facing a combination of formal charges, including sexual assault, attack on a police officer, and malicious damage to property. He is expected to make his first appearance at the Dewetsdorp Magistrate’s Court in the near future, as the community and law enforcement continue to stand firm with the #EndGBVF movement.
