MPUMALANGA – Mpumalanga police have seized an estimated R2 million worth of dagga and arrested a suspect following a high-speed chase along the N4 highway. Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) intercepted the illicit shipment on Saturday, 12 September 2026, after a suspect vehicle fled from routine law enforcement patrols.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers were conducting standard patrol operations along the N4 Road between Malelane and the Nkomazi Toll Plaza when they observed a suspicious white Toyota single-cab bakkie, fitted with a canopy, traveling at an excessively high rate of speed.
When law enforcement attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver failed to comply and instead accelerated toward the Nkomazi Toll Plaza. SAPS officials reported that during the pursuit, the driver operated the vehicle recklessly, traveling along the barrier line and forcing other motorists off the roadway, thereby endangering public safety. The vehicle ultimately sped through the toll gate without stopping.
Police continued the pursuit along the R38 Road in the direction of Low’s Creek, where officers successfully intercepted and brought the vehicle to a halt.
A subsequent search of the bakkie revealed numerous bags containing compressed dagga. Further investigative measures determined that the total weight of the seized narcotics was approximately 336 kilograms, carrying an estimated street value of R2 million.
The driver was immediately apprehended at the scene. SAPS authorities have officially opened a case of dealing in dagga, which is now under active investigation.
The arrested suspect is scheduled to make their first appearance at the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 14 September 2026, to face formal charges related to dealing in dagga.
