MPUMALANGA — A targeted Ermelo crystal meth seizure orchestrated by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has led to the apprehension of two individuals suspected of transporting illicit narcotics through the province.
The intelligence-driven crackdown unfolded on Sunday, 19 July 2026, resulting in the confiscation of a substantial quantity of illegal drugs and the subsequent arrest of the alleged couriers.
Multi-Agency Task Force Executes Highway Interception
The operation was initiated at approximately 17:45 through a collaborative effort involving the Ermelo K9 Unit, the Secunda Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI), and the Secunda Serious Crime Investigation (SCI).
Law enforcement officials operationalized a tip-off regarding two occupants driving a silver, old-model Mercedes-Benz sedan. The intelligence suggested the pair had traveled from Volksrust to Ermelo specifically to pick up illicit substances.
Tactical officers monitored the N11 highway between Ermelo and Amersfoort. When the targeted Mercedes-Benz was spotted navigating the route from Ermelo toward Amersfoort, police signaled the driver to pull over for a comprehensive vehicle search.
Narcotics Discovered in Dashboard Compartment
A thorough inspection of the vehicle yielded a significant find. Investigators uncovered a packet of crystal meth weighing exactly 310.20 grams, which had been carefully stashed inside the car’s cubby box.
Following the discovery, a 44-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman were detained at the scene. Both individuals are being held on suspicion of contravening the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act. The confiscated crystal meth has been valued at an estimated R93 060.00 on the street.
The duo is scheduled to make their first appearance before the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court shortly to answer to charges of drug possession, while police continue with further investigations into the broader supply chain.
