EASTERN CAPE — A devastating Parsonsvlei murder-suicide has resulted in the deaths of two married South African Police Service (SAPS) members in Gqeberha. The Eastern Cape law enforcement community is currently addressing the fatal domestic incident, which unfolded in the early hours of the morning at a private residence.
According to a SAPS spokesperson, authorities responded to an emergency call at approximately 00:05 on Saturday, 18 July 2026. Upon arrival at the Parsonsvlei home, investigators discovered the bodies of a 34-year-old woman and her 44-year-old husband. Both individuals had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were declared deceased at the scene. Preliminary findings indicate that the couple engaged in an altercation immediately prior to the shooting.
The spokesperson confirmed that both victims were active-duty police officials. The female victim held the rank of Sergeant and was stationed at the Mount Road SAPS precinct. Her husband, who allegedly shot his wife before fatally turning the weapon on himself, was also a Sergeant attached to the New Brighton SAPS station.
An official investigation into the precise circumstances surrounding the shooting remains ongoing. As part of standard forensic protocol, the firearm suspected to be the weapon used in the incident has been secured and confiscated by investigating officers.
In response to the event, the SAPS has formally activated its Employee Health and Wellness Programme. The spokesperson emphasized that this critical support system is being deployed to assist grieving extended family members, fellow officers, and notably, the two minor children who were present inside the home when the tragedy occurred.
The South African Police Service issued a stern condemnation of the violence, specifically addressing incidents where police members harm their intimate partners before committing suicide. The spokesperson strongly encouraged any service members experiencing emotional or psychological distress to proactively seek professional assistance and counseling through available departmental resources.
