EASTERN CAPE — The investigation into the Mthatha traditional ceremony shooting has led to an attempted murder charge after a 60-year-old local businessman voluntarily surrendered to law enforcement. The incident, which involved the discharge of a licensed weapon in a crowded space, has prompted a comprehensive police probe into the circumstances surrounding the event.
The alleged discharge of the firearm occurred inside a tent during a traditional gathering situated in the Mazizini locality of Zimbane A/A, Mthatha. According to authorities, the gunfire struck a 39-year-old woman who was attending the event. The victim, an off-duty police officer stationed in Mthatha, sustained a bullet wound to her upper body. She was immediately transported to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment, where she currently remains in a stable condition.
Following the incident on Saturday, 18 July 2026, the 60-year-old suspect turned himself in at the Mthatha Central Police Station at approximately 23:00. Police confiscated his licensed firearm, which has been secured as evidence for further forensic and ballistic investigations. Detectives are currently working to establish the motive behind the violence, as the inquiry remains active and ongoing.
The accused businessman is scheduled to make his first court appearance at the Mthatha Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 20 July 2026.

Major General Modishana directed his investigative teams to conduct a meticulous inquiry into the matter, emphasizing that a thorough process is essential to ensure justice is fully served for the victim and the community.
