Johannesburg Door-to-Door Protests Target Undocumented Foreigners in South Africa

Following a strict June 30 deadline, demonstrators forcibly remove migrants from Alexandria residences, prompting thousands to flee the nation amid rising socioeconomic tensions.

JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng — In a dramatic escalation of anti-immigration sentiment across South Africa, door-to-door protests in Johannesburg have resulted in undocumented foreigners being forcibly removed from their residences by militant demonstrators.

During the operations on Thursday, groups of activists navigated through the Alexandra township, breaking down doors and entering properties where they suspected undocumented migrants were sheltering. Those pulled from their hiding places were subsequently handed over to law enforcement officers waiting outside.

While the demonstrators maintain a strict anti-immigration stance, some leaders acknowledge that the situation on the ground has spiraled beyond their initial control.

“Our mandate is clear. We need them to go. We don’t need them here in South Africa because they are here illegally,” explained one protest spokesperson, who also conceded that the current unrest has become unmanageable. “But now I can see it’s out of hands now. We want to close this march today.”

The aggressive tactics are deeply rooted in local socioeconomic frustrations and a perceived lack of state intervention. Highlighting the community’s grievances, another demonstration representative stated that local citizens feel abandoned by authorities.

“South Africans feel overwhelmed because our borders are neglected, and we have a high influx of undocumented foreigners,” the spokesperson noted. Citing severe economic strain and security concerns, they added, “The pie is now too small to share because South Africans are now unemployed. The rate of crime has gone too high. So, we want the government to be serious about deporting undocumented foreigners.”

These forced residential evictions mark the latest flashpoint in months of frequently violent anti-immigrant demonstrations across the region. The recent surge in vigilantism was largely catalyzed by an unofficial June 30 ultimatum issued by protest leaders, demanding that all illegal migrants vacate the country by that date.

In the wake of this deadline and the ensuing hostility, the pressure has resulted in a mass exodus, with thousands of foreigners already fleeing South Africa in recent weeks to escape the volatile environment.
