MAHIKENG, North West — A massive manhunt is currently underway in Mahikeng following a high-profile prison escape at the Rooigrond Maximum Correctional Centre. Authorities are actively searching for Edward Madiba, a dangerous offender serving a 20-year sentence, who allegedly cut through the burglar bars of his single cell to flee custody.
According to the Department of Correctional Services, Madiba was being held in a single cell on a federal charge related to a previous escape incident. His original two-decade sentence stems from severe convictions, including robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of a firearm and ammunition, kidnapping, and parole violation. A preliminary investigation indicates that the inmate used an illicit tool to cut through the door’s burglar bars to facilitate his breakout.
Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo confirmed that eight departmental officials have been served with notices of contemplation of suspension. This precautionary measure is pending the outcome of a thorough investigation into the security breach and the circumstances surrounding the escape.
Sam Moela, a member of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services, expressed deep concern over the incident. Speaking on the matter, Moela emphasized the necessity of strict consequence management following a comprehensive investigation. He noted that the committee has repeatedly alerted the department regarding inadequate staffing ratios, which often fail to match the number of inmates in specific cells or blocks, creating operational vulnerabilities that can lead to escapes.
Addressing the high likelihood that cutting tools were smuggled into the facility, Moela acknowledged that contraband remains a persistent challenge for the justice system. He stated that while the department is actively battling to keep correctional facilities contraband-free through stringent searches and access protocols, any individuals found assisting in the smuggling of prohibited items must face severe consequences, including the opening of criminal cases.
The escape has also sparked broader concerns about public safety, particularly in light of recent incidents where hardened criminals reoffended shortly after being released on parole. Moela stressed that the primary focus must be a coordinated, multi-agency manhunt to apprehend Madiba before he can harm the public.
He urged that escaped offenders face additional charges to deter future attempts, while reiterating that correctional centers must remain secure environments focused on rehabilitation, rather than harbors for hardened criminals to evade justice. The portfolio committee has pledged its continued oversight to ensure the department fills critical security vacancies and safeguards both the public and the integrity of the correctional system.
